The Brighton-Eggert Animal Clinic opened in August of 1979 in a small storefront location adjacent to Brighton Cleaners. It was co-founded by current Managing Director Dr. Peter Freyburger and Dr. Philip Weber. Originally envisioned as a part- time outpatient clinic, business grew rapidly. Brighton-Eggert became a full time animal hospital by the end of its second year. In April of 1984, the Brighton-Eggert Animal Clinic moved across Brighton Road to its present location occupying the site of a former gas station.
Growth of the clinic accelerated after its move to larger quarters. Every few years an addition was added to the building and new veterinarians were added to the staff to accommodate growth. By 1998 the clinic had added four additions and had grown to a staff of eight veterinarians. After Dr. Weber’s untimely death in 1998, Dr. Freyburger became the sole owner.
Brighton-Eggert’s growth continued and in 2001 the Friendly’s Ice Cream Restaurant next-door closed down. The restaurant real estate was acquired. Since the buildings were only 16 feet apart, one final addition connected the two buildings and the former restaurant was converted to a fully functional cat hospital while the original building became the dog hospital. The Brighton-Eggert Animal Clinic became the first animal hospital in New York State to offer totally separate hospitals for dogs and cats. In 2005 the Brighton-Eggert Animal Clinic was acquired by National Veterinary Associates who in conjunction with Dr. Freyburger oversee the operation today.
In depth details about the history of the Brighton-Eggert Animal Clinic are in the final six chapters of Dr. Freyburger’s award winning book of memoirs titled Vetting: The Making of a Veterinarian. Copies of the book are available for sale at either reception desk. It’s a fun read and makes a great gift for any animal lovers on your gift shopping list.
